I was driving myself two hours down to see my parents for the long weekend, listening to my Spotify playlist and testing my vocals as I sang along to the songs.
The first song I really wanted to hear on my journey was Kiss from a Rose by Seal, as I felt my harmonising sounded particularly good with it. I decided, though, to listen from the beginning of my playlist, even though I knew it would take quite a while to get to Seal.
As the journey went on, I skipped a few songs along the way. Then, with only about twenty minutes left until I reached my parents’ home, I couldn’t believe it — I had finally reached Seal!
I was only about twenty seconds into the song when, suddenly, it changed to Ordinary World by Duran Duran. I remember thinking, That is so odd… that has never happened to me before.
I was actually quite disappointed because I had been looking forward to listening to Seal, but something about the change made me more alert. I started listening carefully to the lyrics, wondering if there was something I was meant to hear or understand.I ended up putting Ordinary World on repeat for the rest of the journey.
When I arrived, I went back onto my Spotify playlist to find out who the song was by. That was when I noticed something even stranger — Seal wasn’t anywhere near the point in the playlist where I thought I had reached him.
There should have been at least another hour of songs before I got to Seal, and from where Seal appeared, Ordinary World was more than an hour back in the playlist.
I couldn’t make sense of it.
I told my mother what had happened, and neither of us could work it out. I had never experienced anything like that happening on Spotify before.
Was it simply a Spotify glitch or something I’d somehow overlooked? Or was it one of those strange little moments of synchronicity that makes you stop and wonder?
Whatever the explanation, I know one thing — Ordinary World appeared at exactly the moment it did, and it certainly got my attention.
Although, perhaps there’s another explanation… maybe the universe had simply decided it had heard enough of my singing and thought, “Right, Christine, that’s enough now — let’s put on Duran Duran!”
